It is good to be back at Vivero! After updating my bio, I played around with my site, tinkering with the homepage. While I ultimately decided only to change the website’s tagline to “The zone for all things Schlimm,” I experimented by changing images and colors on the theme before deciding I liked what I had before the most. As I was first trying to access my website, I got a bit worried it was broken. On cPanel the website had an error message saying a plugin needed to be updated, but when I went to update the plugin, the plugin said it was already updated to the latest version. At first I thought I would not be able to log in because of this, but I figured it out.
As for advice to new fellows, I would say that they should no be afraid to tinker–as my experiences today goes to show. Especially with backups, one should not be worried about breaking a website or program by experimenting with it. Sometimes the best designs come out of experimentation! Moreover, while finding online resources can be a great way to overcome technical problems, sometimes these guides do not fully explain why there fix works. It is like an online redstone tutorial in Minecraft–if you follow it step by step, you might build the finish product, but without tinkering with the redstone you won’t understand why it works, which can be really important.
Finally, I had an idea for what I could do for the October/November long-term projects. A lot of my professors talk about not understanding how Canvas works or how to make pages. I would probably need a way to access Canvas from an administrative/professor account, but could I make a tutorial explaining how to make a Canvas page?
