This week I returned to WeVideo and created a minute-long film using stock footage. The process went fairly well, however I do have some feedback for the training. I’m not sure how I feel about the training guide being a video rather than article. While the screen-recording is nice, I found it hard to return to other parts of the guide when I needed to revisit as I worked on my project. Where I could control-F search on a written guide, searching via the video’s contents tab was a bit more confusing. This was not a big deal though.
That said, I think the training would be better if it did not require collaboration with another fellow on a video. Working with a partner requires using the WeVideo “Collaborative Editing” feature, and while it allows two people to edit the same file, this feature slows down the program to a snail’s pace. In contrast, when I revisited the training this week, WeVideo ran perfectly fine.
Recently, in my free time I have started using other free online video editors like Canva and CapCut. When I decided to revisit WeVideo, I wondered how the program would compare to these others, and if it would be better for students to train on these programs rather than WeVideo. After finishing my project, I think WeVideo is still worth teaching to Vivero Fellows, due to the great depth of stock footage that comes with the college’s subscription. There is a wealth of high-quality video, images, and audio that students should know that they can use for schoolwork. I think the WeVideo training should be revised to emphasize WeVideo’s stock footage more prominently. Nevertheless, CapCut and Canva also have their own troves of stock footage and might have some features WeVideo lacks. These alternatives could be included in a leveling-up section for Vivero Fellows interested in learning more about video editing software.
That said, the WeVideo training is pretty comprehensive, so I do not think much should be changed beyond that.
